Basic Colors and Their Meanings

Black is the color of night, historically a time for Witches to gather for ritual. Black has been associated with forbearance rest, constancy, the planet Saturn (and by extension, Saturday), and he number eight. It is also the color of mourning and sometimes of evil intentions or negative emotions. Witches tend to use black in magick aimed toward banishing or as a way of representing a mock death so something new and positive can be born.

Blue is very different from black, being the lovely color of a clear sky. Traditionally blue is linked with Venus, Fridays, the number six and the astrological sign of Capricorn. Among Druids, blue was a sacred color that denoted someone who’d achieved the rank of bard (a formally trained storyteller often entrusted with the oral history of a group)’ while Christians associated it with the Virgin Mary. Magickally speaking, blue is used to encourage wisdom, insight, happiness, truthfulness, patience, and peace.

Gold is a form of yellow but metallic. To most Witches, it represents solar energy and the god aspect. Gold was part of many magickal healing rites in Europe for a very long time, giving it associations with health and recovery. Additionally, we can use this color to better connect with the masculine energies of the universe and with attributes like leadership skills, logical thinking, conscious awareness, and problem solving.

Green has many aspects, being the predominant color of vibrant, growing things. It’s associated with Mercury, Wednesday, the number five and the astrological sign of Cancer. In the sacred space, various hues of green are applied to support maturation, steady progress, healing, hopefulness, and transformation.

Orange resides somewhere between red and yellow in its energy. It’s associated with the astrological sign of Leo, Sunday, and it releases a kind of friendly warmth. Typically, orange candles or other items are used in spells and rituals directed toward understanding theories, directing your will effectively, kinship, kindness, and harvesting the fruit of your labors. It may also be applied for mental alertness that isn’t quite as intense as that provided by gold. To understand this difference, just consider how your eyes feel when blinded by the sunlight at noon, as opposed to the gentler orange light of the sunset.

Purple is a more spiritual hue. It corresponds with Jupiter, Thursday, the number three and the astrological signs of Sagittarius, Gemini and Virgo. Meditating on purple inspires an awareness of Spirit and ancient knowledge. Magickally, it supports any spiritual undertaking, centering, psychism, and wisdom.

Red is for passion and fire. Its correspondences include Mars, Tuesday, the number nine and the astrological signs of Aries and Scorpio. Lore tells us that certain fairies and ghosts are afraid of red because it symbolizes life’s blood. With that in mind, Witches continue to use red for protection as well as for energy, health, dramatic purification, love, stamina, motivation and desire.

White is an all purpose hue. It is magickally neutral, because it can represent any type of energy due to its purity. Its correspondences include the number seven and he Goddess. For thematic magick, white is best suited to oaths, safety, sincerity, the divine self and enlightenment.

Yellow represents kindness, belief, and friendship. It’s associated with the astrological signs of Libra and Taurus, the season of late spring and early summer, and uplifting occasions. Magickally, many Witches rely on yellow when they want to improve communication or inventiveness, make themselves charming, strengthen productivity or attract general blessings.
